Climate Hawks
Climate Hawks got started as part of a virtual conversation based on articles written by David Roberts at Grist. After a good deal of virtual discussion on the Grist website, a new 'label' was selected to help identify people who were not necessarily environmentalists but were in favor of aggressive action on clean and renewable energy.
David put his ideas up about why the label 'environmentalist' limits support for action on clean energy and climate change, and then asked for reader input. Roughly two days and more than 200 reader comments later he posted a result with an article entitled, Introducing 'Climate Hawks'. Subsequent discussion resulted in two more clarifications from Dave here and here. The latter post pointing out something necessary, that you don't have to agree with the climate science in order to promote clean energy development.
As Heather Goldstone notes on Climatide,
"Roberts says the term is intended to be a catch-all, non-judgemental term for those who are concerned about climate change and clean energy but who are not necessarily in agreement on other environmental issues. Like it?"
While the idea of Climate Hawks was not necessarily to draw attention, more to fill a nomenclature void, it will probably become an identity as well (at least if we have our way).
You can find us talking about climate change and clean energy out on twitter as @ClimateHawks or by searching for the #climatehawks and #screeee hashtags.
